Chapter Fifteen

“They’d planned for the worst,” Bali commented as she watched Dallanger pull away from the curb of the studio.

He’d given them a ride in the guise of doing his job. Carnelian expected that was just to give himself deniability when they were finally killed. He could say he’d done his job and tried to help her but had been unable to prevent her death.

“Apparently,” Carnelian commented heading for the studio. “I still have a meeting to get to. Are you coming?”

“I shouldn’t be roaming the streets with things like this. Burns will use any excuse to strike at me.”

“Do as you please, but this isn’t just about him,” Carnelian told her.

“You’re a witch, but he can still hold you to the same standard and no doubt he will.”

“Let him do what he wants,” she retorted, jerking her cell phone from her purse with Bali hard on her heels as they reached the building.

“We need to regroup, here,” Bali snapped. “Do the words ‘hostile territory’ mean anything to you?”

“Not much.” She flicked her wrist at the door, it slid open, and Carnelian marched forward. “They planned her murder and to steal her money and property.”

“Even with that being true, our time is limited before Burns sends a team to take this place out.”

“I fucked up,” she screamed whipping around. “I wasn’t there for Mina, but I won’t let her down again. I’ll burn this town to the ground before I walk away without getting her killer or killers.”

Bali sighed harshly. “So, how do you want to play this?”

“I want to find out who all the players are, which I’m going to do, and then take them out,” Carnelian told her and then faced front and dialed a number. “Hey.”

“Hey, baby girl,” Morgan greeted her quietly. “Tate told me he handed off the will.”

“It’s more substantial than it should be,” she said.

“Not really,” Morgan replied. “Everything’s in order.”

“Mina wasn’t worth that much, Morgan. She couldn’t have been, even with the studio. So, what’s up?”

Bali was right behind her as they moved over the floor and Carnelian was conscious that her keen bat hearing would allow her to pick up the quiet conversation. She didn’t really care because it would save time with repetition.

He blew out a breath. “Just take my word for it. Are you staying safe?”

“Call Ace and tell her to do a work up on Mina’s last six months of activity here and abroad. I gave Rayya a list, so make sure those are all checked out. We’re dealing with bee-bats and firefly-bats.”

“Are you sure?” he asked quietly and neither of them said anything for a long time.

Bali waited, sensing tension in Carnelian which made her wonder what the family and the bats had to do with Jeri and Mina’s murders.

“Positive,” Carnelian finally said.

“We have to end this if it’s them,” he said coldly.

“I know, but the complication is they’re entangled with the woman Mina was seeing. I’m thinking this was a two-front attack with two attackers, each with their own end game.
